Daily Area Rug Care

Preventative care steps that you can complete daily will help preserve the appearance of your area rugs. Always make sure to use area rug pads underneath to reduce the effects of daily activity. Make sure to help prevent dirt and debris from entering your home by using mats at all entranceways, and having guests and residents remove footwear during rainy or icy weather. Keep all pet nails and claws trim to avoid snagging the rug fibers and brush pets frequently to reduce the amount of dander on your rugs. You will want to vacuum as frequently as possible to remove abrasive particles from the rug surface.

Area Rug Care: DIRT & DEBRIS

Removing dirt and debris from your rugs is the number one way to preserve their appearance and maintain a blemish-free surface. You can vacuum daily or as frequently as possible with an appropriate vacuum model that matches your rug construction. Disengage all beater bars and ensure that your rug manufacturer has warranted for robot vacuums before investing in one. Dirt, debris, and pet dander can become abrasive to your rugs if not effectively removed. If your rugs cannot be vacuumed, take them outside and shake the dirt and debris off the old-fashioned way!

Area Rug Care: STAINS & SPILLS

When spills or accidents do land on your area rugs, it’s important to act as promptly as possible to prevent permanent stains from forming. First, gently remove any solid material with a spoon. Now, blot the spill with a clean, dry cloth working towards the center from the outside. Use a gentle carpet-specific cleaner to spot-treat the stain, and always use clean cloths when treating a spill. If a stain is still visible afterward, we recommend at least one professional rug cleaning annually as part of an overall area rug care strategy. If your rugs are machine-washable, follow the manufacturer's guidelines accordingly.
